What is appropriate work place chatter?
A is ‘boinking’ a few different trucker/customers, golly I hope one doesn’t find out about the other(s); all this in the midst of her working on her divorce. At 20. J is gay, so is B. S likes to smoke in the bathroom at work (a big no-no). Another S is 24 and mostly worried about where his next hit is coming from, aren’t you glad he is your baker? D is… D. Her sketchy boyfriend/fiancé hangs around the shop, and when he does she doesn’t say two words to him, when he is not around she can’t help herself but to talk about their impending nuptials… in June 2012. Also D seems to have miscarriages/be pregnant every few months (so my co-workers have told me, I’ve only been here about a month), and also says that the previously mentioned SO can lift her car with her in it. Another D, the same B, another S, are most worried about their tans. L, and J, the senior supervisor and sometimes manager are maybe sleeping together? Even though they are both married otherwise. T telling me B is an idiot, B telling me the opposite.
Things you would want to know about your co-workers? I can safely say no on all accounts.
Water-cooler gossip seems to come with every work place, every where it is different, but sort of the same. I can think of one workplace were there was not gossip to speak of, and that was when I worked as a housekeeper. That was probably because there was myself, the manager, the secretary, and the owner (who was only there a few hours a week. It was nice. I did my thing and didn’t worry too much about how others thought I should do it or anything.
At my other jobs there have been varying levels of gossip and such, but my new job is by far the worst. It’s a very diverse group, of varying ages and “socio-economic” statuses and I think that is part of it. There is a high turn over so there is a “old guard” and then the newer folks (less than 5 years with the company) and that causes friction. My goal is to navigate through it without offending anyone and staying out of the cross hairs.
