Today’s random art piece is by my favorite sculptor, Auguste Rodin.
It’s a piece called Walking Man (1877). It quite literally depicts a man walking.
The sculpture was originally “St. John the Baptist Walking”, but while working on his sculptures, Rodin decided to remove the “extraneous” pieces so the sculpture would depict that which was most important- the body and legs.
Rather than showing an entire body, Rodin attempted to show dynamism through minimalism. His sculptures were created in pieces, and then melded together.
By avoiding the head and arms, Rodin showed the power in the muscular chest, and the determination the figure is striding forward with. The broad stance and forward leaning chest indicate power, strength, and focus.
